What Is Forestry Mulching?

Forestry mulching is a land clearing method that uses a single machine to cut, grind, and clear vegetation. A forestry mulching machine, also referred to as a forestry mulcher, masticator, or brushcutter, uses a rotary drum equipped with steel chipper tools (teeth) to shred vegetation. Our machines are often used for a variety of purposes:

  • Land clearing
  • Right-of-way
  • Pipeline/power line clearance
  • Firebreaks and wildfire prevention and management
  • Vegetation management
  • Invasive species control
  • Wildlife restoration
  • Levee maintenance
  • Visual enhancements

This process is great in applications where erosion is a concern because mulching vegetation leaves the soil structure in place and limits the disturbance of soils. The mulched material can be left in place to act as an erosion barrier and return nutrients back to the soil. The vegetation will eventually decay, and grass can be maintained by mowing.

For other types of land clearing projects where mulching might be less desirable, SES Stormwater Erosion Specialties is equipped with bulldozers, excavators, and high lifts to stack the vegetation for burning.
